Egypt and Maersk Sign $3bn Green Hydrogen Development Agreement

A consortium led by the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) and the green energy arm of Danish logistics giant Maersk recently signed a framework agreement to build a large-scale green fuel production facility in the Suez Canal area to provide bunkering services for ships and help Egypt implement its decarbonisation plan. The first phase of the project will see an investment of $3bn.

The Egyptian consortium includes the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). SCZone Chairman Walid said that the economic zone is taking a number of measures to transition to the development of a green economy, including green hydrogen, which will be exported to the European market. For its part, Maersk said the agreement was "an important milestone in the global transition to green fuels", stressing that Egypt has a number of natural advantages to support "world-class green methanol projects", including access to high-quality renewable energy, the Suez Canal being the "most important waterway for trade" in the world, and the fact that it is the "most important waterway for trade" in the world. The Suez Canal is the "most important waterway for trade" in the world.

The first hydrogen train in the Middle East will soon be commissioned!

On 8 October, Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister revealed that the Middle East's first hydrogen train will be put into trial operation in the country.

In September 2022, Saudi Arabian Railways (SAR) had reportedly signed an agreement with with Alstom, the global rail transport giant headquartered in France, which plans to launch a hydrogen-powered train (hydrail) trial, in which Alstom acts as a partner in providing Saudi Arabia with Bur's custom-developed Hydrail solution. The trial marks Saudi Arabia as the first country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to implement hydrogen trains. Hydrogen trains use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity and power their propulsion, and these trains have zero carbon emissions when in use, making them a greener alternative to traditional diesel-powered trains, which is in line with Saudi Arabia's commitment to developing a sustainable transport infrastructure.

Suzuki's first hydrogen-powered motorbike will be unveiled soon! Equipped with a 70Mpa hydrogen storage tank

Suzuki's first hydrogen-powered motorbike is reportedly going to be unveiled at the Japan Transport Show 2023. The hydrogen-powered model is said to be based on the Suzuki Burger Man 400, which basically doesn't look much different from the regular fuel-burning Burger Man 400, and the vehicle carries a 70 MPa hydrogen storage tank at the keel position to power the engine, which can be refuelled with hydrogen simply by taking the bike to a hydrogen refuelling station.

German steel giant Salzgitter commissions 100MW green hydrogen plant

German steel giant Salzgitter has announced that they have commissioned EPC contractor Andritz to build a 100 MW green hydrogen plant designed to supply hydrogen for steelmaking. This initiative is part of Salzgitter's decarbonisation programme to reduce emissions from steel production.

The green hydrogen plant, to be built by Andritz, will use electrolyser technology, with 18 5.5 MW pressurised alkaline electrolysers supplied by Norway's HydrogenPro. The company has reportedly reached an agreement with ANDRITZ in April this year to collaborate on green hydrogen projects in Europe.

Zhejiang Jiaxing Adjusts Financial Subsidy Rules for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles, Removes Restrictions on Moving Out of the City

On 10th October, Zhejiang Jiaxing Municipal Bureau of Economics and Information Technology (JXMET) once again solicited opinions on the revision of part of the Implementing Rules for Financial Subsidies for Promoting the Development of Hydrogen Energy Industry in Jiaxing City. This revision, deleted the "commitment to participate in the national fuel cell demonstration and application of Jiaxing city group four-year demonstration period shall not move out of the city" requirements, details are as follows:

Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology and other 10 departments on the issuance of "Jiaxing City to promote the development of the hydrogen industry financial subsidies implementation rules" (Jia Jingxin Technology Installation [2022] No. 4) Article 2, "Fuel Cell Vehicle Purchase Subsidy for Promoting the Application of Vehicles," the second part of the subsidy: subsidised vehicles for the city since June 1, 2021, registered according to law The subsidised vehicles shall be hydrogen fuel cell vehicles legally registered in the city since 1 June 2021, and shall undertake not to move out of the city during the four-year demonstration period (hereinafter referred to as the "demonstration period") of Jiaxing's participation in the National Fuel Cell Demonstration and Application City Cluster. Modified to: Subsidised vehicles shall be hydrogen fuel cell vehicles registered in the city since 1 June 2021 in accordance with the law.

Shandong Tai'an City Carbon Peak Work Programme Issued!

On October 10, Tai'an Municipal People's Government on the issuance of "Tai'an City Carbon Peak Work Programme" notice. Which puts forward: promote the construction and application of diversified energy storage system. Strengthen the layout of energy storage system construction, build "pumped storage + compressed air energy storage + electrochemical energy storage + hydrogen storage" coordinated and complementary development model, to create a group of pumped storage power station, salt cavern energy storage and gas storage reservoir group, coal mining subsidence area photovoltaic power generation base group and "Taishan Lithium Valley "To create a new type of diversified energy storage base supported by chemical energy storage and hydrogen energy storage. Innovative pumped storage and electrochemical energy storage, photovoltaic power generation joint configuration mode, promote pumped storage into the market operation. Modify the use of the Da Wenkou Basin salt mining cavity, the construction of salt cavern gas storage reservoir project, to create a nationally important salt cavern energy storage and gas storage base. Encourage new centralised photovoltaic projects to build or lease energy storage facilities, and support the construction and operation of shared energy storage facilities and prioritise leasing to photovoltaic projects. By 2030, the installed capacity of pumped storage power stations in operation will reach more than 2.8 million kilowatts, and the scale of new energy storage will reach more than 3 million kilowatts.
